How we compare — and what we do not do
We take no money from manufacturers, run no affiliate links, and do not rank brands. This page explains what separates a good system from a poor one so you can judge a quote yourself, because the honest answer to "which is best" is that it depends on your water.
The four things that actually matter
1. Correct grain capacity
The single most common mistake. An undersized system regenerates too often, burns salt and water, and wears out early. Capacity should be calculated from your household size, daily water use and measured hardness — not guessed from the size of your house.
2. A metered valve, not a timer
A timer regenerates on a schedule whether you have used water or not. A metered valve regenerates when the resin is actually exhausted. It costs a little more up front and saves salt and water for the system's whole life. If a quote does not say which it is, ask.
3. A serviceable valve
Mainstream valves — Fleck and Clack are the two you will see most — can be serviced by any competent plumber and parts are easy to get. Proprietary dealer valves work perfectly well, but tie you to that dealer's service network for the life of the unit.
4. Warranty and who honours it
Ten years on the tanks and five on the valve is a reasonable benchmark. Read who is actually liable: a manufacturer warranty means little if the installer who fitted it has gone, and some warranties are void without professional installation.
Sizing, properly
The standard calculation: people in the house × 75 gallons per person per day × your hardness in grains per gallon = grains to remove daily. Multiply by the days you want between regenerations.

On well water, add roughly 3 to 5 grains of compensated hardness for every ppm of iron — see well water. Sizing up one step is the cheaper mistake; sizing down costs you in salt and wear for a decade.

How to read a quote
Five questions that separate a good quote from a vague one:
- What grain capacity, and how did you calculate it? A good installer tested your water and can show the arithmetic.
- Metered or timer valve?
- What exactly is included? Unit, labor, drain line, permit, disposal of the old unit, first fill of salt.
- Warranty on the equipment, and separately on the work?
- Who services it, and what does a service visit cost?
A quote that is a single number with no specification is not a quote you can compare against another one.

No single brand wins. Correct sizing, a metered valve and an installer who will service the system matter more than the badge. Dealer brands like Culligan and Kinetico offer strong service networks at premium prices; independent installers fitting mainstream Fleck or Clack valves usually cost less and are easier to service later.
What size water softener do I need?+
Multiply the number of people by 75 gallons a day by your hardness in grains per gallon to get the grains you need to remove daily. A family of four in 10 gpg water needs around 40,000 grains. Size up rather than down — undersizing costs you in salt and wear for years.
Is a metered water softener better than a timer?+
Yes, in almost every case. A timer regenerates on a fixed schedule regardless of use; a metered valve regenerates when the resin is actually exhausted. The extra cost is modest and it saves salt and water for the life of the system.
Are expensive water softeners worth the money?+
Not automatically. Premium dealer systems buy you service network, warranty and in some cases genuinely better engineering. They do not buy softer water — a correctly sized mainstream system removes hardness just as completely.
Is a dual-tank water softener worth it?+
If you cannot tolerate losing soft water during regeneration — a large household, shift workers, very hard water — then yes. Otherwise a single tank regenerating overnight is fine and cheaper.
Can I buy a water softener online and have it fitted?+
Yes, and it often costs less. Two cautions: some manufacturer warranties require professional installation, and you take on responsibility for having sized it correctly, which is the mistake that matters most.
