What's the difference between salt-based and salt-free?+
A salt-based softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness, through ion exchange. A salt-free conditioner leaves the minerals in the water but changes their form so they are less likely to stick as scale. Only the salt-based type gives you the classic soft-water feel.
Do I actually need a water softener?+
It depends on your water hardness. Below about 7 grains per gallon most homes manage without one. Between 7 and 10 it becomes worthwhile, and above 10 gpg the damage to appliances and plumbing usually pays for the system over its life.
How long does a water softener last?+
A well-maintained salt-based system typically lasts 10 to 15 years, and some quality units run longer. Resin beds and valves are the parts that wear; both are usually replaceable rather than needing a whole new system.
What size softener do I need?+
Size is driven by how much water your household uses and how hard that water is. As a rule of thumb, a family of four in a moderately hard area suits a 32,000-grain unit, and very hard water or a larger household pushes you to 48,000 grains or more.
Will an installer have to visit my home?+

Does a water softener work on well water?+
Yes, though well water often carries iron and sometimes manganese or sulphur alongside the hardness. Those need treating as well, usually with a pre-filter ahead of the softener, which adds roughly $300 to $800 to the job.
